My Personal Creator Story: Why I Believe the Best Time to Start Is Now
Sally Nguyen is a Boston-based luxury travel and lifestyle content creator, luxury travel advisor, and founder of Sallytrubella Travels, a boutique luxury travel agency she launched in 2022. Inspired by a lifelong love of travel that began as a child exploring the world with her single mother, she now helps people discover extraordinary destinations while sharing authentic stories that encourage others to pursue their passions. Through her content, Sally advocates for greater diversity in the travel industry and believes everyone has a unique story worth telling.
When people ask how I became a travel content creator, they often assume it started with a viral video, a brand partnership, or a perfectly thought-out business plan.
The truth is much simpler. It started with my mom. I was adopted by a single mother who worked incredibly hard to give me every opportunity she could. Her job required frequent travel, and whenever possible, she brought me along. While many kids spent their weekends close to home, I was experiencing new cities, learning about different cultures, and seeing firsthand just how big and beautiful the world really is.
Those trips shaped who I am today. Travel wasn't just something we did; it became part of who I was. It taught me curiosity, confidence, empathy, and the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone. Looking back, I didn't realize it at the time, but those childhood adventures planted the seed for everything I'm doing today.
Fast forward to 2020. Like millions of people around the world, I watched travel come to a complete stop during the COVID-19 pandemic. Airports were empty. Borders closed. Vacations were canceled. I found myself scrolling through old photos and videos from my travels, reliving memories and dreaming about the day we'd all be able to explore again.
Instead of keeping those memories to myself, I started sharing them online. Not because I wanted to become an influencer. Not because I expected it to become a career. I simply wanted to inspire people to keep dreaming about travel while sharing tips and destinations they could add to their bucket lists for when the world reopened.
I began posting old travel videos, destination guides, hotel recommendations, and travel hacks I'd learned over the years. Then something incredible happened. People connected with my story. My posts started reaching thousands of people. Then hundreds of thousands. My audience continued to grow, but what meant the most wasn't the numbers. It was the conversations. People told me they booked destinations because they had never seen them on social media before. Others simply thanked me for making luxury travel feel welcoming and attainable.
One message stood out over and over again. "It's so nice seeing someone like me doing this."
That's when I realized something.
Growing up, I didn't see much diversity in the travel industry. Luxury travel, especially, often felt reserved for a certain type of traveler. As someone who is mixed, adopted, and now raising a family of my own, I didn't always see stories that reflected my own experiences. I wanted to help change that. I wanted to show that luxury travel is for families. That you can travel with toddlers. That your background doesn't define where you belong. That the world belongs to all of us.
As my audience continued to grow, I realized my passion for travel could extend far beyond inspiring people online. In 2022, I took another leap of faith and launched Sallytrubella Travels, my own luxury travel agency.
Starting my agency allowed me to combine two passions: creating inspiring travel content and helping others experience those destinations for themselves. Today, I work with families, couples, honeymooners, and adventure seekers to design unforgettable luxury vacations around the world. One of the most rewarding parts of my journey is knowing that I don't just inspire people to travel but I help make those dreams a reality.
Looking back, opening my agency was just as scary as posting my very first video. Neither came with guarantees. Neither came with a roadmap. Both simply started with believing in myself enough to take the first step.
Today, I've had the privilege of partnering with tourism boards, luxury hotels, airlines, and global brands while exploring destinations I once only dreamed about visiting. But those opportunities weren't the goal. They were the result of consistently showing up as myself.
If there's one message I hope to amplify through my platform, it's this: If you've been thinking about creating content, just start. I hear people say all the time: "I don't have the right camera."
"There are already too many creators." "I'm waiting until I know more." "I'm nervous about what people will think." I understand those feelings because I've had them too.
But here's what I've learned. There is nobody else in the world exactly like you. Nobody has lived your experiences. Nobody has your perspective. Nobody has your voice.
That's your superpower. People often worry that social media is saturated. But the truth is, people don't follow creators because they're perfect. They follow creators because they're authentic. Your story is something no one else can copy. If I had waited until I had the perfect camera, the perfect editing skills, or the confidence to call myself a creator, I never would have started. Instead, I learned along the way. Every video made me better. Every mistake taught me something. Every opportunity came because I was willing to begin before I felt completely ready.
That's how growth happens. Looking back, I'm grateful my mom introduced me to the world at such a young age. I'm grateful that during one of the most uncertain times in recent history, I decided to post an old vacation photo and videos instead of letting those memories sit on my phone. Most of all, I'm grateful I didn't let fear convince me my story wasn't worth sharing.
Because it was. And so is yours.
Whether your passion is travel, food, fashion, photography, fitness, parenting, or something completely different, there is someone out there waiting to hear your perspective. You don't need expensive equipment. You don't need thousands of followers. You don't need to know everything before you begin. You simply need the courage to take the first step. Your style will evolve. Your confidence will grow. Your audience will find you. But none of that can happen if you never start.
Today, my platform is about so much more than beautiful hotels or breathtaking destinations.
It's about inspiring people to explore the world. It's about showing families that adventure doesn't end when you have children. It's about helping travelers create memories they'll cherish forever. And it's about reminding aspiring creators that their voice matters.
If my journey has taught me anything, it's that the biggest opportunities often begin with the smallest decision. One post. One video. One leap of faith. So if you've been waiting for a sign to start creating, consider this your reminder. The world doesn't need another copy of someone else. It needs the only version of you.
Your story is your greatest asset. Share it.
